Changing the brightness and contrast of a video
Adjusting exposure and contrast can make a video look more appealing, or ensure it better matches the brightness of other videos you are editing it with.
Here's an example of the kind of change you can make in a few clicks:
To do this, first start a Create project and add your video or image file to the project's media library, then:
1. Drag and drop the video or image into the timeline
If it's not already there, drag and drop the video or image from the media library into the timeline at the bottom of your project.
The clip will be highlighted when selected and a menu will appear in the top left.
In the top left menu, click Color Balance. Four sliders will display (if you don't see all four, try using the scroller on the right hand side of the menu to scroll down).
4. To adjust brightness, move the EXPOSURE slider left or right
To make the clip brighter: drag the toggle on the Exposure slider to the right.
To make the clip darker: drag the toggle on the Exposure slider to the left.
5. To adjust contrast, move the CONTRAST slider left or right
To give the clip higher contrast: drag the toggle on the Contrast slider to the right.
To give the clip lower contrast: drag the toggle on the Contrast slider to the left.
Changes are made immediately as you adjust the sliders. You'll see what your adjusted video looks like in the preview window to the right:
NOTE: You can also adjust the temperature (warm or cool colours) by moving the Temperature slider, or the saturation (colour intensity) by moving the Saturation slider. See this how to change the colour video article if you would like examples.
6. Close the Color Balance window
Once you are finished adjusting the clip, close the Colour Balance menu by clicking the X in the top right.
7. Save your final video
If you're finished editing and would like to save the video or videos in your timeline to your computer, click the Export video button in the top right. For more information see: exporting your video.
____________
Undoing a brightness or contrast change
You can return a video to its original state at any time by selecting it in the timeline, opening the Color Balance menu and clicking the Reset button in the bottom left.
Alternatively, drag and drop the original video into your timeline again from your media library.
____________
